Homepolish designer Leah Harmatz worked with a San Francisco couple for just 20 hours in order to turn their new place into an inviting, warm home. The couple had just moved into their new house in Bernal Heights, a quiet neighborhood on a hill with great views of the city, and had almost no furniture since they’d been living out of the country. Although they had some initial ideas for furniture pieces, they needed help pulling it all together, so they turned to Homepolish.

 

“The overall aesthetic was sort of eclectic-modern, with a Mid-Century Modern influence,” says Harmatz of the house, which was built in 1975. “The furniture has clean lines but a lot of warm texture and layers. We wanted to create a comfortable space for entertaining and relaxing.” The couple was also eager to incorporate all the books and art they’d collected over the years into the space to give it personality.

 

One of the challenges with this home was clearly defining the entertaining spaces in the open floor plan, which includes the living room, dining room, and kitchen. “We delineated the living room with the large moroccan rug and paired a bench with the dining table so it flows easily into the kitchen,” says Harmatz.

A navy blue velvet sofa from Article is the focal point of the living room, so Harmatz kept the rest of the palette fairly neutral. She painted the walls white and added in a black and white vintage Beni Ourain rug, handcrafted Sean Woolsey brass and leather coffee table, a metal and wood Eq3 table, Bend Goods copper chairs, and a Room and Board leather bench. “I love the dining table, bench and copper chair combination,” Harmatz explains. “They’re all from different vendors and varying materials, but they ended up working really well together.”
