When it comes to finding the perfect paint color for your room, striking a balance is key. Especially in the most maximalist spaces—where bright hues are at the forefront—it’s important to find a shade that complements, not competes with, the bold decor.
That was the unique challenge Domino’s senior social media editor Alyssa Clough faced when she moved into her new apartment, a former grocery warehouse in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Thankfully, Behr® Paint came to the rescue.
As a self-proclaimed “bohemian maximalist,” Clough knows how to make a statement. (Her last apartment boasted a rainbow wall!) But for her new bedroom, she wanted to incorporate an air of Parisian elegance.
Inspired by European hotels like Hotel Henriette and a dressing room architect Elizabeth Roberts designed for Rachel Comey’s flagship store in New York, she first focused on strategic splashes of color, pairing a blue rug with a bubblegum pink side table and a yellow velvet headboard.
All there was left to do was find the Behr Paint color that tied everything together. And, in true maximalist fashion, a stark white was out of the question.
“I usually go really bold on the walls,” she explains. “But the pops of color in my old space were really primary, so I wanted to explore other colors.”
Clough ultimately chose Hush PPU26-16, a soft gray from Behr Marquee® Paint. With any paint color, the undertones have the power to make or break the overall look. Fortunately, the hint of lilac in Hush emphasizes the cobalt rug and complements the yellow and pink accoutrements. Clough finished the project in just one afternoon. Versatile but not boring, the shade warms up the walls while acting as a blank canvas for her vibrant details to take center stage.
Color aside, Behr Marquee Paint is mildew resistant and comes in more than 1,000 one-coat hues*, making it a quick and easy way to transform your space.
As expected of someone who works at Domino, Clough’s apartment has no shortage of epic design moments. Her living area’s decor draws inspiration from a traditional New York City loft, while her guest bedroom channels the spirit of the west coast with a palette of sunny yellows. But with its dramatic, silvery walls and colorful, European-inspired touches, her bedroom is the pièce de résistance.
