When Domino asked me if I wanted to try out an incredible new product from Benjamin Moore called CENTURY, I knew right away I wanted to use it to transform my daughter’s bedroom. Mia had outgrown her pretty and more feminine bedroom, so the timing couldn’t have been better. I knew the more custom, sophisticated feel of CENTURYpaint would give it a look that would grow with her, making it a space that she will want to return to even after she has left home.
My goal was to give the space a cooler vibe, reflecting her interests. She’s a true California girl; she’s sporty and loves to surf. The room design was inspired by one of her favorite things: a surfboard I gave her for her birthday that has a black and white vintage textile design.
BEFORE
I decided to keep some key elements like her pink headboard and the 60” high white bead board, but create a whole new look by painting the walls to give it an overall modern bohemian look with edge. I wanted to give the space a clean, rich feel that will fit her teenage lifestyle and beyond.
DURING
The most important element in the design transformation was the bold
. I chose the color Obsidian from Benjamin Moore’s CENTURY line. It’s entirely unique, and I had never seen anything like it before. The CENTURY line is Benjamin Moore’s highest quality paint, created in small batches. The colors in the paint line are more pigmented for a deeper, moodier look.
It’s a specialty paint that provides an incredible finish without the extra work normally required to create a custom look. While the walls were being painted, they went from a shiny gloss to an extremely rich, matte finish. The result was a buttery soft look with a leather-like feel to the touch. It was amazing the impact the paint had on the space even before it was styled. The Obsidian paint color alone created a statement, immediately adding depth and interest to the room.
AFTER
I’ve always believed that when designing a space, less is more. In her bedroom, the custom look of the paint was the focal point of the design. From there it was easy to add minimal furnishings and accessories to create a beautiful, cohesive look.
To complete the room, I chose a vintage rug I found on Etsy, as well as equally unique handcrafted pillows, white linens, soft wood tones, and modern light fixtures. Like the vintage textiles and custom surfboard, the CENTURY paint added a unique layer to the design.
Both Mia and I loved how the space turned out. She is proud of her new bedroom and loves the cool look of the bold black color. The paint really made the space, adding texture and depth to the design. I’m looking forward to using more colors from the CENTURY Line in my future projects.
