You’re about to see a lot of Drew Michael Scott at West Elm with the new release of his holiday collaboration. But there’s a chance you’ve seen him there before. The designer and founder of Lone Fox used to work there as a sales associate and in-home stylist. It’s the job that ultimately inspired him to make a shift from studying fashion to decorating interiors and sharing DIY projects.
Designing his very own holiday decor collection for the big-box store is a full circle moment. In true Lone Fox spirit, the pieces in the collection have a handmade look to them, spanning cross stitch-inspired stockings, crocheted ornaments, and faux bois dinner plates. There are no snowmen or Santas, but rather whimsical woodland motifs. “I’m not a huge traditional holiday decor person,” insists Scott. The forest theme is a subtle nod to his own brand’s tagline: “We hunt so you can gather.”

His West Elm Holiday Standouts
My favorites are probably the ceramics. We did a faux bois, marbled brown-on-cream dinnerware set. Each piece is completely different with hand-applied treatments and variation in sheen. Faux bois is where something looks like wood, but it’s not. We made a sculptural, ochre-colored ceramic set that looks like wood, which feels very storybook and fun.

I’ve always wanted to find a real blue spruce Christmas tree because of its blue branches and organic, whimsical look.
His Chic Wreath Hack
[For the photoshoot], we popped the wreath over the fireplace and ran our garland down the side, intertwining [another] green one. Our collection garland has branchy, sparse greenery with a slight spooky feel, so you can use it for Halloween or mix it for Christmas. Plus, they are battery-operated and light up.
Other Spots He Hangs Holiday Greenery
In my Spanish-style house, I have cute built-ins and archways that are perfect for draping greenery. I also drape greenery across the fireplace mantle and over light fixtures—like my dining room iron fixture, which transforms the tablescape. I try to stick to a home’s architectural lines to drape across, or frame bookcases and kitchen windows.

My favorite starting point for a mantle is going outside and finding a large 6- to 7-foot branch. It’s an easy, free way to get a large, organic, sculptural structure. Whether you rest it on top or slope it up from the hearth tile onto the mantle, it gives you a leading line and base to fill in with other piece
