Owning a house means you live in a world of potential, and that can often translate to a never-ending list of projects. In case you’re having trouble figuring out where to start, Fixr.com recently dug into the renovations people are taking on…and the ROI that often comes with them.

To get the biggest bang for your buck, head to the garage. People who replaced their garage door and then listed their home for sale ended up recouping 268% of the cost (that’s a whopping 74.1% more than last year). In addition to this particular project, homeowners have also found value in bringing in manufactured stone veneer (207.9% ROI), replacing entry doors with steel designs (216.4% ROI), and swapping siding with fiber-cement (113.7% ROI).

We could go on and on but for now, let’s focus on garage doors because we’ve seen some real beauties lately. Here are just a few examples that make a case for ditching the classic white steel for something that suits your home’s architecture.

For a Classic Look: Carriage-Style Doors

Emily Henderson swears that Clopay‘s garage doors are the chicest out there. At her own home, she opted for the company’s Canyon Ridge Elements garage doors and had them all painted Dutch Tile Blue by Sherwin-Williams and finished with faux handles and black strappings to make them look more vintage.

For Good Light: A Garage Door with Transom Windows

Windows can often go underappreciated in a garage, but if you plan on working in the space—wood shop or ceramics studio, anyone?—a little bit of illumination will go a long way. We love how The Krafted Home worked a row of transom windows into this shutter-style garage door.

For Blending In: A Slatted Garage Door

If you’re looking for your garage to flow right into the architecture of your home, “concealing” it behind a wall of slats is a chic solution. Australia-based construction company DASH Construct did just this, and the final result feels like a delightful optical illusion.

This garage door by manufacturer Knotwood only looks like real wood, but the battens are actually made of scratch-, fade-, and crack-resistant aluminum. On top of that, they come with a 15 year warranty, making your investment even more worthwhile.
