When news broke that Dwell Magazine, the modern design authority, and Target were collaborating, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on the products. After sneakily launching over the holidays, we’re here to remind you that they’re available for purchase. Run—don’t walk—to your nearest Target.
Recently, we had the privilege of listening in on a panel with the people who made it happen—but not before sitting down with panelist Greg Van Bellinger, Target Vice President of Product Design and Development, to get all our questions answered. Here are a few things we learned.
1. You can afford these designs.
Target’s price points are unbeatable, which is still applicable to this collection of 125 modern items.
Van Bellinger said, “I think a lot of times people think modern design is expensive and out of reach, and it doesn’t have to be. So I think it’s a great way for people to get introduced to a modern, clean aesthetic.”
And we have to agree. Thanks to this collection, finding the right modern piece for your home—at a price you can afford—feels easy.
2. Outdoor furniture is great for your patio, but also your living room.
One of the things that struck me about the collaboration was just how many products were designed for the outdoors. Great for our lucky friends who experience warm weather year round, but also good for those who are looking for furniture that’s a bit more durable (aka childproof).
Let’s be honest, you don’t need an excuse to put this lounge chair in your living room.
Van Bellinger noted that the outdoor designs are some of his favorite pieces, in part because of the simplicity of the lines and the quality level. Think the orange adirondack chair, the outdoor chaise, and lanterns.
3. Consumers know what they want.
One point of conversation the panel continued to loop back to was that now, more than ever before, YOU, the consumer, knows exactly what you want. The Internet has made us all so visually articulate and knowledgeable about design (among many other things) that the bar has been set higher for designers and product developers. You know your style, what you want, and the affordable price at which you want to buy it at, which is just part of what inspired this collection of stunning, modern items.
