Scroll through Jake Arnold’s Instagram feed and you will feel your blood pressure drop. The moody neutral shades and layers of cozy fabrics that flood his grid immediately evoke a sense of calm. While the designer’s client roster includes the likes of John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry, Rashida Jones, and Whitney Cummings, his peaceful aesthetic is now accessible to the masses thanks to the launch of his first-ever product line with Parachute. The 11-piece collection is all about perfecting your personal sanctuary (the bedroom!) and spans linen pillow covers, pleated curtain panels, and printed robes, starting at $89. Below, Arnold shares his go-to tips with us for creating an A-list sleeping spot on any budget.
Create Ambience With the Right Light
Overhead fixtures are a no-go where you snooze, says the designer. So instead of recessed can lights, opt for a mix of table and floor lamps with soft white bulbs that will lend a soothing glow to the whole space. On the topic of warmth, even if you plan to paint your room white, cover everything—the windows, trim, baseboards, walls—in the same hue, ideally with the tone skewing warm. “It’s a lot more peaceful than having high contrast,” Arnold explains.
Achieve Luxury With High Lines
Arnold typically bases the height of a bed on the average nightstand, meaning the top line of the mattress should be no less than 26 inches from the floor. “When you have a low bed, everything in the room feels out of scale,” he says. “A higher bed makes the space feel elevated—it adds a little more luxury.” To keep things in proportion, the headboard shouldn’t reach above 56 inches.
Think of Your Bed as Your OOTD
Arnold believes bedroom decor should be as cool and casual as an everyday outfit, so think of an oversize striped linen throw like a stylish blazer that adds a professional, finished touch, and an overstuffed bolster like a chunky necklace that speaks to your playful side. Still “it doesn’t have to be so ‘done,’” Arnold says. Don’t settle for an unruly bed, but don’t spend 15 minutes making it every morning either. Investing in the right basics will have you waking up feeling like a star.
