For hotels these days, “wellness” means a lot more than green juice, a spa, and organic toiletries. The basics just don’t cut it anymore for travelers looking to indulge and take care of themselves while relaxing on vacation. Hoteliers around the world are enhancing their offerings by featuring serious programming that integrates nature and adventure and fully utilizes their outdoor surroundings. From dog-sledding in the Teton Mountains to geothermal hot springs in Iceland, here are seven hotels around the world that are doing just this.

Hotel San Cristobal, Todos Santos, Mexico

Experience an anti-resort wellness getaway at the new Hotel San Cristobal, Liz Lambert’s 32-room beachfront boutique hotel on the coast of Todos Santos, Baja California Sur. Activities include scenic hikes through the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, a yoga and meditation center, and private shaman consultations at sunrise and sunset on a cliff overlooking the ocean. There are also cross-fit classes on the beach, authentic fishing excursions with the local fisherman, and surf classes at Cerritos beach with Mario’s Surf School.

Anvil Hotel, Jackson, Wyoming

The Anvil Hotel, located in Wyoming’s mountain town of Jackson, is a renovation of a 1950s ski motel by Brooklyn design firm Studio Tack. With its wood-fire Italian restaurant Glorietta, lobby cafe and retail shop by Westerlind, and 49 newly designed rooms, the vibe is modern yet decidedly rugged Western. Special activities like dog sledding, elk refuge sleigh rides, and wildlife tours are all on offer.

Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo, Monte-Carlo, Monaco

Thermes Marins in Monte-Carlo is the most luxurious spa complex you’re likely to find. In the basement of the historic Hotel Hermitage, private pathways lead you to a vast network of pools, saunas, steam rooms, and treatment rooms, but the most standout treatment is its Cryotherapy offerings (the first facility in Europe to do this).

“The Cryotherapy treatment is a systemic physical treatment that triggers a whole series of reactions in the body by offering the benefits of cool temperatures, already widely used by athletes for recovery and improved performance,” explains its spa brochure. “Within 180 seconds, a session helps to treat muscle and inflammatory diseases, but can also help recovery from jet-lag, help fight against sleep disorders, has an anti-stress effect, and is also an acclaimed anti-aging procedure in the Nordic countries.”

Designed to guide guests towards optimal health and balance, the spa also offers various holistic programs (which can range from four days to four weeks, or longer) which include an in-depth medical health analysis followed by a bespoke treatment routine (spa treatments, fitness routines and nutritional cures) under doctor’s orders.

Eleven Experience Deplar Farm, Troll Peninsula, Iceland

Iceland’s newest 28,000-square-foot lodge, the Eleven Experience Deplar Farm, only accommodates 28 guests, which means intimacy and privacy are paramount. An indoor/outdoor saltwater pool, sauna and steam room, indoor/outdoor hot tubs and flotation tanks occupy the spa and wellness center. In the winter months, you have your pick of activities: cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, resort skiing, geothermal hot spring tours, surfing, and horseback riding. In the summer, take advantage of hiking, peak climbing, stand up paddle boarding, cycling, sea kayaking, and whitewater rafting.

The Ranch at Rock Creek, Philipsburg, Montana

The Ranch showcases an array of rustic yet elegant accommodations, including luxury suites, authentic log cabins, historic barn accommodations, and glamping options.
