Our Managing Editor Brittany Chevalier shared her truly lovely, inspiring space with us in our Fall 2015 issue (which you’re currently flipping through on the regular–us too!). We so enjoyed learning more about how Brittany approaches decor at home, we couldn’t help but wonder how her style translates into her work space, too. We chatted with Brittany (which wasn’t hard..she’s like…right here) to learn more about our beloved colleague.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT DOMINO? WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING ON THIS TEAM?

I have worked at domino since summer 2013, before the magazine re-launched in the fall of the same year. My favorite part about working on this team is being able to utilize my penchant for management whilst being creative at the same time. Also, having the freedom to pitch stories that interest me and seeing them develop fully from the conception stage to the final publication.

DOES YOUR STYLE AT HOME EVER MAKE ITS WAY TO YOUR WORKSPACE?

While I am tidy in all of my spaces, I tend to be less organized at work since I feel like I have an excuse to have papers and books lying around. Busy people have busy desks… right?! Arriving home each evening to a neat apartment allows me a feeling of calm after a full, productive day.

WHAT COMPONENT OF A WORKSPACE (YOUR REAL ONE OR IN A DREAM WORLD) MAKES YOU FEEL MOST PRODUCTIVE?

While many people may not like an open office environment, I find it to be extremely productive for team building and brainstorming ideas. The ability to cross-communicate in a laidback environment without the formality of cubicles or separate offices initiates creativity across all three domino platforms- print, web and commerce.

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST WORKDAY DISTRACTION?

Aside from Instagram and Facebook, I would have to say looking through all of the elaborate and interesting coffee table books that we receive at the office. Abrams, Rizzoli, Assouline (among other publishers), create some of the most amazing books on the market, and they are usually so fascinating that I learn something new on the regular.

IS THERE SOMETHING ON YOUR DESK THAT’S UNIQUELY PERSONAL?

Having an analog clock on my desk is a must! It is how I register and plan my time efficiently. The one on my desk now is symbolic because I bought it on my first day working at domino during a team excursion to buy office supplies. Not only is it cute, but it also helps me stay focused by optimizing my time!

WHAT’S ONE WORKDAY ESSENTIAL YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT?

Aside from my computer, my calculator! A lot of my time is spent working on budgets, so without my calculator I would be lost. The iPhone calculator just doesn’t cut it!

WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE DECOR ADVICE YOU’VE LEARNED WHILE AT DOMINO THAT YOU’VE PUT INTO PRACTICE AT HOME?

I have learned SO many things over the years at domino, but the most valuable advice that I’ve received involves curtains. If you need to scrimp on any home item, do it with inexpensive curtains. Classic white linen panels will last years and are easy to clean. Also- to make any room appear larger, hang them as high and close to the ceiling as possible.
