Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has design on the mind. The congresswoman took to Instagram Live on Wednesday night to answer pressing questions from her followers while snacking on popcorn, sipping red wine, all the while subsequently documenting a very relatable task: IKEA furniture assembly.
Just three weeks ago, the Bronx-native admitted on Twitter that she had been living in her D.C. apartment for two months without any furniture and asked for any and all recommendations on how to decorate her new digs. Her call for help grabbed a ton of attention, including that of Queer Eye designer Bobby Berk, who has offered to help put the finishing touches on her office. Somewhere along the way, however, a friendly follower must have told Ocasio-Cortez to stock up on furniture basics at IKEA—because that’s exactly what she did.
In between off-the-cuff responses regarding the political climate, Ocasio-Cortez successfully assembled a green GLADOM tray table and LISABO desk on Instagram Live. With her screws and directions sprawled out on her apartment floor, she shared a brief word of IKEA-assembly wisdom.
“Advice I once got about assembling IKEA furniture: Screw everything in, but leave the last couple of turns unturned,” she shared. “Don’t screw it super tightly at the beginning. Tighten them up once all the screws are in alignment. It helps you not break everything.”
