We Found the Garden-Inspired Candle Meghan Markle Burns in Her Montecito Home

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may no longer be based in England full-time, but the Duchess of Sussex seems to be holding onto bits of their former European life at their current Montecito, California, home. Last year we caught a glimpse inside their digs when Markle shared her 40th birthday plans from her home office. Between the massive stone fireplace and intricately carved, aptly dubbed Bordeaux dining table she uses in lieu of a desk, the charming countryside vibes were strong. More recently, in an interview in the Cut, we learned that despite the couple’s departure from the U.K., Markle likes her house to smell, well…British. 

According to the profile, the fragrance that fills the air is Soho Home’s Bassett Rose Water candle. The scent is apparently an “ode to the English rose,” per the company’s description, and was inspired by the gardens surrounding Babington House in Somerset (it combines the aroma of freshly picked petals with notes of geranium, lemon, bergamot, and spice). It also happens to be hand-poured across the pond, making it all the more authentic.

Just because the duchess has said so long to most of her royal duties, it doesn’t mean she has to abandon all the enchanting features of an English home. We imagine her paying homage to her husband’s and children’s nationalities by embracing a country-meets-city style like It London designer Matilda Goad does best by layering delicate florals with graphic checked patterns, or adding artful ceramics from Beata Heuman (Alexa Chung is a fan!). Or perhaps Markle will go superbold like British-born designer Edward Hall, whose London flat is loaded with velvet fabrics, Grecian-style busts, and happy doses of yellow. We know she’s got a rebellious spirit, after all.
