What does 2022 have in store? Our community of editors, experts, and tastemakers predict the trends coming soon to a house near you.

Remember way back in 2019 when everyone you knew and everyone they knew up and moved to Austin, Texas? (Or at least that’s what it seemed like.) Well, that narrative is changing. According to Realtor.com’s just-released 2022 housing market forecast, Salt Lake City—the capital of Utah that’s known for its scenic biking and hiking trails and overall easy access to outdoor recreation—will be the most popular place to buy a home next year.

The real-estate platform’s findings are based on year-of-year home sales growth across 100 metro areas in the U.S. While Salt Lake City is projected to grow by 15.2 percent, Indianapolis (14.8 percent) is not far behind, followed by Columbus, Ohio. Here’s a full look at the top 10 places with the fastest-growing sales:

  • Salt Lake City
  • Indianapolis
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Boise City, Idaho
  • Springfield, Massachusetts
  • Virginia Beach, Virginia
  • Akron, Ohio
  • Greenville, South Carolina
  • Kansas City, Missouri
  • Knoxville, Tennessee

Just because you now know where everyone will be moving in 2022 doesn’t mean it will be a piece of cake. The housing market is expected to remain competitive for buyers, particularly the 45 million millennials in the prime of first-time buying who are looking for homes in entry-level price tiers. People will also continue to hunt for larger houses that offer space to WFH and flex rooms to play, exercise, and host guests. We wouldn’t be surprised if there was a spike in Murphy beds, too.
