The most underrated place to source home inspiration also happens to be the most convenient: our favorite brands’ campaigns. When a company like Urban Outfitters drops a new collection, it doesn’t just reveal the new products—it does the heavy lifting for us and shows us exactly how to style those items, often right on its Instagram feed. The brand’s new editorial for its curated collection of Backdrop paints is a prime example—the photo shoot is chock-full of colorful hacks, one of which we’re determined to re-create.

The idea we’re stealing for our own places? A faux headboard DIY that only requires a can of paint. Seriously: In the corner of a simple white bedroom, the UO x Backdrop team painted a cloud-like silhouette in Modern Love to take the place of a traditional backrest. That’s right, you don’t have to paint all four walls in your space.

“The notion that paint can only be used for a full room is antiquated,” says Natalie Ebel, cofounder of Backdrop. “Whether it’s an accent shape or a headboard that doubles as art, [for us] paint isn’t precious.”

Modern Love is one of six hues by Backdrop that are currently available to shop on UO’s website, each retailing for $49. (Later this month, the Backdrop paints will debut in stores.) Psst: There’s also a full essentials kit that includes rollers, trays, and other supplies, so you won’t even have to make an extra stop at the hardware store. In celebration of the collaboration, UO and Backdrop will host a launch party on Thursday, July 11 at the Urban Outfitters’ Herald Square location in New York City.
