For a little extra inspiration, the Domino editors’ favorite Instagrammers takeover our feed each weekend. It’s safe to say tips and covetable images are aplenty. Here’s what you need to know about the most recent feature!

When Megan Schlanchtenhaufen and her husband bought a fixer-upper to transform into their charming, family-friendly home, they embarked on a quest to create a space that was full of character and personality, all while on a budget. A self-classified “design addict” and DIY-er, Megan has pieced together her home into a boho-haven complete with lots of at-home projects and creative layering.

Along the way, the duo saved money by budgeting for bigger projects and finding ways to do the smaller ones themselves. Seeing the potential in every room and piece of furniture, Megan took to our Instagram this weekend to teach us a thing or two about adding that touch of unique character we all want in our homes.

Megan’s Wisconsin abode is proof that even on a budget, you can achieve a super chic, super comfy, and unconventional design aesthetic that works for you.

Make vintage pieces the focal point.

Got an older or more vintage piece but don’t know how to use it? Instead of working to restore it or painting over it, considering leaving it as is. We love the way Megan embraces the imperfections of this bench (a Craigslist find!) by accentuating it with some fun pillows and a vintage rug.

Add texture, and then some more texture.

Megan’s living room serves up a lesson in decorating with an abundant array of textures. Adding a mix of them, intentionally, creates an especially cozy spot in this home. Never underestimate the power of a few leafy green houseplants, stylish ceramic accent pieces, and eye-catching coffee table books, especially when it comes to giving your home that lived-in feel.

Find inspiration in art.

How cool is the thrift-store art piece looming above this space-savvy dining area? Investing in a work of vintage art is a fabulous way to add a focal point to a room, and this one, in particular, comes loaded with character. Here, the color scheme of the painting is complemented by the chairs and upholstery of the pillows on the bench.

Regardless of your taste, budget, or style, learning to layer in materials and textures is a surefire way to make a space look refined.
