When you only have days (or hours) to explore a new city, Domino’s Field Guide is a need-to-know edit of the coolest bars, hotels, restaurants, galleries, and boutiques in the top design cities.

The Balearic island of Ibiza, off the eastern coast of Spain, is better known for its international DJ sets and all-night parties than its peaceful hideaways. But resident Meredith Maltby recommends heading north to find artfully renovated finca hotels, secret shops, and design-minded restaurants—thanks to a newly rooted community of European expats who prefer the quiet life.

Where to Stay

Los Enamorados

Perched on the rocks in the northernmost town of Portinatx, this former hostel was revamped into a 1970s-inspired, bohemian paradise overlooking the sea. The luxe lobby shop offers Japanese caftans, Formentera-made sandals, and other interior items collected in the off-season by owners Pierre Traversier and onetime fashion editor Rozemarijn de Witte.

Legado Ibiza Finca Hotel

This 18th-century farmhouse has been transformed by Vienna-based creative director and designer Andi Lackner, along with his partner, Anders Oberkanins, into an 11-room boutique property overflowing with Instagram-worthy moments around every bougainvillea-covered corner.

Safragell

Original details from this traditional Ibicencan home–turned–new agriturismo, like sabina wood–beamed ceilings and whitewashed walls, set the stage for suites decorated with a Scandinavian sensibility. The infinity edge pool hides a spa beneath it, boasting water therapies and a sauna.

Where to Eat

Bottega il Buco

An offshoot of the perennially packed New York City restaurant Il Buco, island newcomer Bottega il Buco serves up fresh-baked focaccia and locally sourced salads. Vintage bookshelves are stacked high with tinned fish and olive oil, while the antique café tables feature tableware and linens from the Il Buco Vita collection.

Keto Kitchen

Swimsuit-friendly dishes like cauliflower rice bowls and avocado gluten-free toast abound at this sleek, Danish-meets-Mediterranean space, where the open kitchen and pillow-filled banquettes are made for lingering while sipping a vegan Bulletproof coffee.

Cala Xuclar

There are bigger and buzzier beach restaurants in the east and south of the island, but nothing beats the simplicity of this cash-only, sand-in-your-toes chiringuito at the end of a steep dirt road and overlooking a rocky hidden cove. Pull up a deck chair to one of the rustic wood tables and feast on fresh-caught grilled fish with a side of crispy potatoes.
