Designed by New York-based designer Sebastian Errazuriz, this seemingly nameless item dubbed “The Wave Cabinet” has been making its way around the web. Featuring 100 strips of birch wood,  the unconventional cabinet sans doors or drawers, features 100 strips of birch wood that are able to morph into various configurations when pulled to reveal the cabinet’s interior.

Errarzuriz created the cabinet as a part of his series on functional sculptures. The Wave is meant to embody “true delicacy and beauty” whereby the designer re-engineered the process of opening and closing cabinet doors. In a statement on his website, Errarzuriz explains that he is “inviting people to look at one of the simplest forms of furniture design and to forget that we’re talking about furniture, instead to see it as a way of breaking a box.”

This video demonstrates how The Wave Cabinet opens delicately – likened to a paper fan.

Although a practical storage option and beautiful piece of decor, the avant-garde cabinet was created as a piece of art and is not currently available for purchase.
