Your Go-To Guide to Gorgeous, Natural Curls

Natural curly hair queens—especially those with coarse hair—know that maintaining a perfect coif is a helluva lot harder than it looks. So it can be hard to leave your comfort zone to try something new, but—great news—we’ve got an updated, on-trend way to style your gorgeous curls.

Jon Reyman, the master hairstylist and founder of Spoke & Weal, notes that coarse hair is often dry, rough, or fluffy and usually takes longer to blow dry and to style because the hair usually has lots of natural volume. Many people want to tame that natural volume, but trends in recent years have been going in the opposite direction and embracing it. This look Reyman created for Domino’s Brands Partnership Coordinator falls somewhere in the middle.

Reyman wanted to offer a variation on her normal twist-out sets for her curly coarse hair. “Something that is a bit more natural, but still on trend and cool.” (You can see Adrienne’s just as gorgeous before pic above!)

“Normally she does a twist set, and then spends her time elongating her curls, but I actually made it tight, and then I’m pulling it out,” says Reyman. “Easier to go curlier to less than less to curlier—that way you get to control the curl and texture. I can control the shape to make and mold it. It’s the opposite way than usual—we wanted to show a variation in a different way.”

Wash

Shampoo with a light shampoo and a really rich conditioner. Coarse hair really loves oil-rich products, like Aveda Smooth Infusion conditioner or Bumble and Bumble Creme de Coco conditioner.

Blow Dry

Use a diffuser attachment on a hair dryer (Reyman swears by the Dyson Supersonic Dryer). “The idea is it’s easier for me to take curls that are smaller to looser than looser to smaller,” says Reyman. Continue until fully dried.

Finish with more emollients and oils to give it more shine, and then stretch hair until it’s at the desired fullness. Gorgeous!
