This handsome 1912, 3,400-square-foot home in San Francisco’s Lake District, is a perfect blend of old and new. Designers Sarah Johnson and Lisa Sokol of Johnson Sokol chose a very modern interior aesthetic to contrast with the historic Edwardian façade of the home. The duo used dark matchstick wooden floors, intricate woodwork and dramatic coffered ceilings juxtaposed with burlap wallpaper, mirrored walls and tasteful modern finishes. Through a gracious and inviting foyer done in bold black and white stripes, natural light streams in from original casement windows. A gas fireplace and two separate colorful seating areas bring the entertaining areas to life.

A massive yet cozy master bedroom features peek-a-book Golden Gate Bridge views. With wall-to-wall sisal rug against brilliant

white paint

the room is crisp and bright with clean lines. Other features include large windows with a built-in bench, expansive walk-in closets, and a large master bathroom with skylight, dual marble-topped vanity, and shower over tub outfitted in fabulous sparkling tile mosaic.

The dining room is a study in color: A deep green lacquer throughout sets off the mirrored bar and injects new life into the intricate woodwork and decor. Lacquer

paint finishes

were used throughout the home to reflect the incredible natural light it receives.

Here is a peek at more of this home’s fabulous features.

“The beautiful original casement windows are highlighted by being framed in black so they pop against white walls,” says real estate agent Nina Hatvany. “The room is infused with color and pattern through the choice of bright and varied furnishings.”

“The smoky antique mirrors on the columns and across the side wall elongate an already very wide space and reflect light to all sides, complimenting the original coffered ceilings, casement windows, moldings and columns in the space. The modern stone mantle blends seamlessly into the white walls. This room is an artful study in contrast between a contemporary aesthetic layered on top of old-world design features,” Hatvany says of the layered living room.

“Tucked away off the dining room, Sarah Johnson and Lisa Sokol of Johnson Sokol took a very

small powder room

and decided to make it a study in color and pattern,” Hatvany says of this tiny, yet impactful powder room. “The whimsical pink wallpaper adorned with parrots and tropical leaves, combined with the electric coral lacquer paint on the moldings and door frames, ties the room together with a fabulous gold palm tree chandelier as the centerpiece. Gold hardware and frames blend beautifully with the theme, and the white lacquer floor makes the room feel bigger, as does the slim-lined

with minimal storage.”

“The dining room is truly unique. Centered around a white lacquer table with deep green velvet and gold chairs, the bold color scheme is carried onto the lacquered walls with gold accent detailing,” says Hatvany. “The polished black wood floors add drama and an intense contrast to the white ceiling. Neon green silk window treatments add a pop of brighter color, framing the elegant casement windows and the lovely garden view.”

“This black kitchen is a welcome departure from the standard white and gray aesthetic,” says Hatvany of the striking space. “The black lacquer cabinets, with sleek clasp hardware, are brightened up by the gleaming stainless Wolf range and hood, marble counters, and an intricate white textured tile backsplash. The white lacquer floor in the kitchen and the contrasting light colors of the adjoining breakfast room, make the space feel extremely open, airy and filled with light.”

“The built-in bench anchors this breakfast room, and the lofted ceiling and skylight frame the large windows and focus your attention on the lush greenery outside. The patterned wallpaper adds dimension to the otherwise all white space, and a light wood table lends a slightly more rustic feeling for intimate family gatherings. The gorgeous gold geometric sconces illuminate the already sun-filled room,” Hatvany says.

“The master bath is one of the more traditional rooms in the home in terms of the neutral color scheme but the designers were able to infuse some personality into the space with the use of reflective gray mosaic tile in an elegant swirling design across the tub and shower wall with a complementary mosaic tile floor in a more random pattern, “ says Hatvany of the peaceful retreat. “The large skylight over the shower and tub allows the light in to make the tiles sparkle beautifully.”
