In Tucson, Arizona, the design scene is just as free-spirited as it is modern—think: vibrant pairings of primary hues and textures that go beyond textiles. Naturally, the under-the-radar city has become a respite for creatives seeking solitude and a constant stream of inspiration. You won’t find cookie-cutter boho style here.

At its core, Tucson’s unique aesthetic is all about thoughtful layering and pops of colorful patterns, further fueled by whimsical touches and subtle nods to the surrounding landscape. The result is a style that goes beyond the stereotypical eclectic look—and it’s begging to be replicated in our own spaces.

Channeling the earthy neutrals and natural sculptural elements of the Southwest, we sought out the pieces that would help us do just that, with a cozy reading nook in mind. Here’s how we brought the desert home:

A Conversational Seating Arrangement

Seats are fundamental for a reading nook, and a mix-and-match pairing is a must. A mustard yellow–meets–ochre swivel chair signifies that the ’70s design is alive and thriving, while the Scandi woven-leather option will lend a streamlined moment to the scene.

A Surface to Live in the Middle

Prop an end table between the seats as a catchall. Bulky rattan coffee tables need not apply here. The drum shape of this version is sleek, and the material still captures the feel of the desert landscape.

A Rug That Grounds the Space

Instead of layering two contrasting rugs, opt for one that has it all. This Southwestern-inspired piece, with its bold pop of color and perfectly imperfect pattern, does the trick.

An Easygoing Lighting Source

Ditch the lamp and embrace a small space–friendly alternative: a pendant, specifically this airy woven one. As is clear from our side table recommendation, rattan is a signature boho material, but it’s neutral enough to work with any decor style.

A Patterned Vase

This dainty vessel is simply begging to be filled with a fresh palm frond or two. A vintage-esque pattern brings on the whimsy.

An Added Layer for Storage

Line this compact rattan tray with a linen textile, preferably in a bright color, and allow the piece to function as a mobile entertaining center. Or keep it bare and use it as a base for corralling your trinkets and books.
