The origin of the peacock chair is clouded in ambiguity, but its stance in culture is indisputable. Rumored to have been designed for royalty, its Edwardian-inspired frame is a hallmark of its iconic style. Glorified by celebrities during the golden era of film, the chair became a status symbol in the ’50s and ’60s and made numerous cameos (Morticia Addams was an avid fan). These days, you probably know it best as the quintessential badge of the nouveau Boho movement.

Crafted from rattan, the aptly titled seat features a broad, flared back and an intricate build, often including lifted arms and an hourglass-shaped base, giving it a throne-like appearance. It’s versatile enough to live both indoors and out—you can thank the woven rattan for that.

Having undergone numerous reinventions, the modern adaptation of this classic means that it’s no longer exclusive to a Bohemian look. Here are the spaces and finds that prove it.

In artist Carly Jo Morgan’s Topanga Canyon home, a blush-hued wicker chair offers a contemporary redux to the original. Coupled with a shaggy rug and patterned throw pillows, it fits right in with the space’s New Age–meets-Cali-cool vibe.

When boho queen Justina Blakeney and Selamat Designs linked up for a collaboration, the designer reimagined the chair with a geometric spin that included a unique hexagonal seat and a swivel base.
