Interior designer Jaclyn Joslin’s latest project came in the form of a Ranch-style home in Leawood, Kansas. Her client, who shares the space with her two rescue pups, was looking to make a few key updates to the home, along with carving out a space where she could entertain her family and friends. We caught up with Jaclyn to get the scoop on the everything that went into the revamp. Take a look!

In the kitchen we went with Farrow & Ball’s Lamp Room Gray for the cabinets. We opted for a white beveled

for the backsplash, and changed out the counters to a dark gray Caesarstone. We also added in a wine fridge at the bar, swapped out the cabinet hardware, and replaced the ceiling fan with a West Elm light fixture.

We even took out a wall between the old laundry room and powder bath to combine the space, which fits her lifestyle better, and she is thrilled with the new functionality.

What’s the inspiration behind the decor?

The kitchen and living room were updated around 10 years ago, and the finishes were pretty dated. The cabinets were painted a red and yellow combo, and the brick surround on the fireplace had been covered over with something that looked like slate, so overall, the space felt very dark and heavy. My client wanted a fresh and modern look that would be comfortable for entertaining and everyday living.

New hardwood floors were installed in both spaces and we gave the living room just a few cosmetic updates. We tore out the beams in the ceiling, as they were not structural and because I felt that it would open up the space more. When we ripped the old fireplace surround out, we weren’t sure what would be underneath and we were delighted when it turned out to be white brick! All it needed was a fresh coat of paint.

I designed the shelf unit to the left of the fireplace, to balance out the brick wall, and to act as a place for my client to display collectibles and her large collection of cookbooks. Most of the furniture is new with the exception of the sofa, which we had reupholstered in a durable blue fabric that her dogs wouldn’t be able to destroy too easily!

What was the inspiration behind the color palette that was selected?

My client’s favorite color is pink and probably her next favorite color is gray. I used a lot of gray throughout: on the cabinets, drapes, lamps, and rug. I tried to subtly add pink throughout without having it be overwhelming or detracting too much from the casual yet sophisticated vibe we were going for. I love the subtle blush pink of the West Elm swivel chairs and the bolder pink of the Twyla art on the mantel. It was all about layering in the right amount, although I have a feeling that she wants to add more pink!

Any parting words of wisdom?

If something doesn’t turn out quite right the first time, don’t guilt yourself into living with it. We both thought the original design on the mantel would look great but knew immediately when it went up that it wasn’t quite right. We remedied it right away, and luckily it wasn’t too expensive of a change to make!
