We’re a month plus into 2018 and by now, your ‘new year, new you’ resolutions may be falling to the wayside. Is it changing ever-so-slightly to ‘new year, same rush-out-the-door look’ everyday? We totally understand. But if you’re still feeling like it’s your year to change things up (or you’re at least contemplating it), allow us to suggest some expert-approved, fresh ideas to update your standard go-to makeup, hair, and nail colors.

MAKEUP

Life is for the living, folks. And if you (like us!) can practically apply your daily makeup on without looking at a mirror because your such a creature of habit, there are some easy, fun updates to add an element of excitement.

Eye Jewelry

Shimmer eyeliner is a big trend for spring, says Chantecaille’s National Artistry Ambassador Eddie Hernandez. “Time to swap out the old black and brown! Gem tone shades such as Chantecaille Luster Glide Silk Infused Eye Liner ($30) in Amethyst, a pearly burgundy or Olive Brocade, a gilded mossy green, incorporate refined pearl for an an instant pop of shimmer that enlarges eyes, attracts light and contrasts the lash line.”

Ed note: During Chantecaille’s spring preview, this shimmery eyeliner trick really was the catalyst for this entire article you’re reading now. I throw on my same eye makeup everyday, which is basically nothing, just tubular mascara. Hernandez applied a bold, light-reflecting gold eyeliner simply from the inner corner of my eye to about a fourth into the eye (seriously, that’s it) and called it “eye jewelry.” It takes maybe five seconds, is totally foolproof, and is a subtle, yet bold eye look.

Intense Berry Lips

“It’s always nice to focus on a bold lip; it’s a look that works on everyone, regardless of age and skin tone,” says celebrity makeup artist Wendy Rowe. “One of my favorite go-to lip looks is a rich, intense berry lip with a natural-looking pared back brow and flawless skin.”

Firstly, Rowe recommends to use a lip liner in a matching shade to your lipstick, and trace around the edge of lips. “You need to smile when you do this to perfect an even shape at the bottom of the lip. Even out any mistakes with a q-tip dipped in makeup remover.”

Once you are happy with the lined shape, use a lip brush to apply your lipstick to fill in the lips. “Blot with a tissue and apply a second layer to give it a really long lasting, intense finish.”

Chantecaille Lip Chic in Violetta ($38) is fabulous, packs a lot of color, but is as light as lip balm. Or give E.L.F. Moisturizing Lipstick in Wine Tour ($3) is super cost effective and gorgeous.

Dramatic Glitter

Love a dramatic smokey eye but want a fresh update? This has you written all over it then: a bold eye with a whole lot of glitter.

“Begin with eye makeup so you can clean up glitter fallout and excess eyeshadow before foundation,” says makeup artist Yuki Hayishi. “I use cream eyeshadow as a base for the glitter eyeshadow because it’s easy to blend and to create the shape. Make sure the color of the cream shadow matches the glitter color otherwise it will be hard to blend them together.”

Interested? Give Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow ($24) a go; it’s so incredible and foolproof.

HAIR

Throwing your hair into a topknot on the daily? Or asking for the same ol’ same when getting a cut or color? Nothing wrong with playing favorites, but there is something to be said about mixing things up. Something as simple as an updated haircut or color can change your look entirely.

Teddi Cranford, owner of White Rose Collective (the coolest New York salon around town), and lead stylist of ApotheCARE Essentials, says “If you’re in a rut with your hair, there are subtle ways to change it.”

Bangs

“Adding some “Bardot bits” to long hair so when you pull your hair up you have bits around your face to add softness,” says Cranford. “Or bangs, which don’t need to be ‘bangs,’ instead they can be soft and totally suited to you and your face shape.”

No Layer (Cake)

“I’m currently a fan of no layers,” says Cranford. “I feel it adds a cool modern look to your hair instead of the classic ‘long layers.’ When you have all one length hair I think it looks modern when there is a bit of dimension with the color too, it adds the illusion of movement.

If that seems unrealistic then have your stylist do a soft blunt line on the bottom of your existing haircut just to richen things up. I’m really into rich hair. Rich hair to me is heavier—aka not so layered.”

You’re Getting Warmer

Jenna Perry, colorist at White Rose Collective, is loving warmth. “Hair color trends are getting much warmer in 2018. Warmer tones reflect more shine and make your hair sparkle. It also looks healthier than ashy tones. Blondes can be bright and golden, and brunettes can ask for richer caramel color. Redheads can be more fiery with copper hues that are less dense.”

“Also rich color, not too highlighted. More like if you were in the sun for a year, then what would happen?,” agrees Cranford.

Just A Touch

“I always say ‘less is more’ and truly believe that hair is the most important accessory,” says Perry. “Anyone can update their hair with a subtle face frame highlights, it adds soft dimension to your natural color. Or even a gloss for vibrancy and shine.”

NAIL POLISH

If your nail salon already knows your color choice before you walk in, maybe it’s time to change it up.

Opposites Attract

Dineh Mohajer, co-founder and creative director of Smith & Cult, loves to go polar opposities.

“It is so hard to imagine getting stuck in a nail polish rut when the choices right now are endless! However, if you feel stuck in a nude/neutral shade rut, the best option is to go to the other end of the spectrum, go deep red. Smith & Cult’s Nailed Lacquer in Dark Like Me or Lovers Creep will knock you out of the neutral zone without feeling like your nails are screaming ‘Look at me!’

“Same can be said for if you are stuck in the red polish rut, try super soft and feminine, but still sexy. Smith & Cult’s Nailed Lacquer in Sugarette and Ghost Edit are just as strong of a statement as red shades, but quietly grab attention.

“I think what’s really exciting about nail colors for 2018 is that our choice of nail shade is no longer dictated by seasons, any color is acceptable all year long, that in itself makes it hard to get in a rut, and, of course, with glitter and nail art playing a huge role you can stay safe in your shade comfort zone, but layer with glitter or do simple subtle nail art to shake it up. Basically there are no excuses for ruts when there are no more rules!”

Bare Minimum

Sometimes the simplest idea can be the chicest, and bare nails with minimal design touches are super chic.

“I’m really loving a sheer color because it gives a hint of color while still keeping the nails looking fresh and minimal,” says Amy Wong, creative director of Paintbucket Nails. “And then adding a simple design, like a line or stripes (which I’m currently really into) would look really chic.”

“I also love a bare nail with gems, and this definitely looks great on short nails.”

If you’re missing color, Wong is also loving black, lavender, and metallic colors right now.
