Beige, turquoise, and terracotta are unlikely companions, but according to PPG Paints, they make up a trio you’ll be seeing crop up more and more come January. The brand just announced its color trend forecast for 2021, naming Transcend, Big Cypress, and Misty Aqua as the ones to watch—and it’s all in the name of wellness.

The Be Well palette emphasizes comfort and optimism and is meant to encourage a slower lifestyle—something we got a sneak peek of when we crashed the company’s Color of the Year workshop back in February. Transcend, a rich oatmeal tone, is the grounding neutral, which, when taken together with earthy Big Cypress “is the equivalent of a big, comforting hug for your home,” according to PPG Paints. The wild card is Misty Aqua, a zingy blue that livens up the combo.

The trick to bringing all three home at once is relying on a simple formula. PPG Paints recommends following the 60-30-10 design rule: Dedicate 60 percent of the room to the dominant color, 30 percent to the secondary hue, and 10 percent to the accent. It’s up to you which you relegate to each vocation: Do you try a wall–furniture–door trim combination? Or maybe a ceiling–freehand mural–rug mix? It might be an unexpected palette, but with the right proportions, it’s also surprisingly versatile.
