Art is expensive. So many of us drool over large-scale, graphic art prints only to find they are thousands of dollars.

Enter: This DIY, which only calls for a few supplies and a little bit of inspiration from your last museum visit or your favorite coffee table book. Our designs take cues from the bold and geometric work of Frank StellaJoseph AlbersAgnes Martin, and Ellsworth Kelly.

Stock up on the supplies below in a palette you love, secure a flat surface, and create a unique art piece for your home—all for a whopping $40.

What You’ll Need:

  • Artists paper. I like Canson Paper, and you’ll want something large such as 22 x 30. Pictured in Bright White.
  • High-quality colored paper. I like Bazzill, but construction paper works, too.
  • Simple frame (Pictured is the Essentials Wood Gallery Frame from Blick Art Supplies – color is natural, size 24 x 30).
  • Scissors
  • Circular punch: 2 sizes are pictured (3.5 inches3/4 inches)
  • Double Stick tape
  • Cutting mat

Instructions:

1) Choose the design for your graphic art piece: we stuck with patterns that use lots of geometric shapes, in particular, two sizes of circles and identical diamonds in multiple colors.

2) Create templates for cutting out multiple shapes. Cut out one diamond or punch several circles from colored paper of your choosing.

3) Use this shape for tracing on colored paper. Cut out multiples. For the circular piece, we cut both sizes of circles in half to achieve a juxtaposed look.

4) Build your artwork by mapping out the colored pieces onto artists paper (using a ruler to be sure it’s centered on the page). Snap a photo so you have a visual reference for the next step: adhering the design.

5) Adhere design using double-sided tape. Check you work from time to time to be sure you’re centered.

6) Frame and hang!
