The fourth location of cult workout-wear brand Outdoor Voices just opened in New York City’s Upper East Side neighborhood. From its first shop in Austin with offices now based in New York and Austin, Outdoor Voices (OV to its close followers) creates stylish and technical workout wear. Its stores offer the same experience: chic spaces with smart design.

The Upper East Side location was engineered by Austin group, McGuire Moorman Hospitality, with Architectural Designer, Will Fox, heading the design in their fourth project with OV.  “We follow a lineage in developing the stores, using similar materials and palettes while also working with the site specificity of each space,” Fox says. The Central Park-adjacent store came with old bones and two floors, presenting Fox with a unique set of design challenges and inspirations. This includes the previous tenants fluorescent lighting, which was removed during the build yet inspired the Dan Flavin-like tubes used on lower floors wall. “It was a quick build out, but we repurposed pieces from previous pop-ups while adding certain elements to elevate the space,” explains Fox. The smoky mirrors, raw aluminum and chrome handles found at this location are fancy yet informal, playing off of the plywood accents that speak to the contemporary yet approachable design true to all OV spaces.

The women’s collection lives on the street level floor of the two story brick and mortar, along with two textural dressing rooms and an assortment of lifestyle products, including

soaps and OV cork shapes bundle of yoga accessories. On the lower floor lives the men’s collection, with clothing fixture racks by Ana Kraš, custom-seating shapes by MMH, and a ping-pong table—perfect for recreational activity mid-shopping experience. Layered geometric-shaped carpets facilitate movement throughout both floors while playing off the neutral tones of the collection. Colorful colliding shapes function as seating and give nod to Ellsworth Kelly prints, notes Fox, who sited contemporary art and design as important inspiration for Outdoor Voices various hubs. Team member Grace Pandola summed up the space’s aesthetic: “The store is aimed to be functional yet playful. We like to think it’s like the jungle gym went to art school.”

Outdoor Voices UES is now open at 135 E. 65th St. at Lexington in New York City.
