It’s hard to make crochet sound sexy. The material almost instantly conjures up images of some grandma (probably yours) knitting you a blanket to keep you safe from the draft. Which is why, when we saw crochet make its way down the fashion week runways for the ss19 presentations, we were a little surprised—not least because this latest rendering looks nothing like the crochet we’re used to.
Instead, it’s taken on a hybrid form. Mixed seamlessly into one piece with a melange of other fabrics and sewing techniques, it more so resembles netting. The woven product almost looks like some kind of fabric mesh: More modern in its sensibility, less weighty, and undeniably cool.
It seems that the 2019 way to do crochet is by broadening the definition of what “crochet” traditionally means. Reimagining it in a slew of punchy colors, contemporary materials, and unexpected functions, breathes new life into a tired material. Here’s how to try your hand at the trend.
Fisherman’s netting, but make it Scandinavian-chic. Natural woven rattan encircles an earthenware vase for a mix of texture and material that’s perfectly suited to the neutral-loving minimalist. Blur geographical lines by taking a page from our favorite French girls, filling this vase not with fresh blooms but rather with some dried flowers or leaves for something a bit more subdued.
It’s not every day you see a crochet copper-toned runner constructed out of wire, so when you find something this unique you snap it up. The perfect way to bring some edge to a tablescape—particularly thinking ahead to holiday entertaining—it’ll ground your table setting easily. Layer it over a neutrally-toned linen runner for a cool textural moment, or keep it bare for a more punchy effect.
Mimicking the look of a fabric-woven piece, this sleek chair turns tradition on its head. Matte black is always a foolproof way to make anything look instantly elevated, and this chair is no exception. Use as a statement-making desk chair or pick up a set to deck out your dining room table in style.
