MEET CHRISTINA FLOWERS, MINTED + domino’S FEATURED MONTHLY ARTIST!

by  ANNA KOCHARIAN

Formally trained as an architect and an industrial designer, artist Christina Flowers is one to approach her work with structure and rhythm. Her dynamic background instilled a unique approach to her artistic method, inspiring a distinguished influence to her creative endeavours. Following graduate school, Flowers made the bold move to the Rockies, where she would work as a Creative Director, with a focus on resort marketing. The chance to ski and snowboard at any and all hours was simple a bonus! After a move back East, Flowers began her own business as a graphic designer, designing stationery, and focusing on her art. Today, the artist resides in Charlottesville, VA, where she creates her art inspired by the surrounding beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here, she touches on her mid-century modern style and her idea of the perfect day. Take a look!

WHERE DO YOU FEEL MOST INSPIRED? I feel the most inspired when I’m outdoors. There’s nothing like a little hike to lift my spirits and inspire a moment of clarity. I also love to travel. Seeing new places with a fresh set of eyes can be endlessly inspiring.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? My space is mostly white, black, and walnut, with pops of bright colors. I lean towards a mid-century modern style, and love a space that feels happy and playful.

WHAT MAKES A HOME BEAUTIFUL? The stories it tells. I love going into a home that is full of life. Objects that have been collected from travels, photos that are full of history, and anything handmade. Wide open windows with beautiful views never hurt either!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST? The excitement of creating. Knowing that each day when I wake up I get to “make” something. There is a thrill that accompanies that process. I know that I am not alone in this feeling and it is proven repeatedly by my daughter, who fills our home with new creations every day.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION? My family! Can I call them a possession? I have a little girl and boy. They challenge and support me, and make me laugh. I would not be the person or artist I am today, without them.

ON WHAT ITEMS DO YOU SCRIMP? SPLURGE? My husband and I are slowly remodeling our home and we both like to do whatever we can ourselves. I’ve found that there are projects I’ve started to scrimp on, and they’ve slowly turned into a splurge. I have a tendency to get overly focused on my design ideas, I’ve got to be careful with that!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION? I love going to the mountains during the winter. My favorite spot would have to be Aspen, Colorado – it’s where I used to live and where I met my husband!

WHAT’S YOUR IDEA OF THE PERFECT DAY? A day on the mountain with fresh snow and friends. Warming up in the lodge, by the fire, at the end of the day isn’t too bad either!
