If there’s one thing we know about Mindy Kaling, it’s that she’s not afraid to make bold design choices. The former Domino cover star has been experimenting with color for years—when she redesigned her office in 2015, she opted for Serena & Lily wallpaper; an electric yellow sofa; and a sprinkling of graphic pillows, armchairs, and poufs. Basically a maximalist’s dream come true.

But these days Kaling is leaning into a slightly more subtle trend: piped fabric trim. The actor and writer showed off her rust-hued sofa on Instagram this week, and we were struck by its camel piping. The two-tone moment is fun but understated, making it an ideal design choice for a minimalist who loves a bit of quirk.

The best part about a piping moment? It lets you to experiment with patterns and colors you might not otherwise choose for a large upholstery project. Hay’s Silhouette sofa sports light orange piping to offset the textured upholstery, whereas CB2 introduces a bit of faux leather to its Colette couch. If, like Kaling, you love color, Munna’s forest green sofa is the ticket (with the curvaceous shape and velvet upholstery every millennial craves). For a clean, bright option, check out Anthropologie’s marigold and cream combination.
