A checkered pattern is one print that will never go out of style. Though it has been reimagined through various iterations over the years, ranging from plaid to gingham, you can’t look past the original black-and-white print.

Beyond covering your floors in classic checkerboard tiles, there are a number of small ways to experiment with this maximalist trend. “A pillow can be added to any sofa for an extra layer of maximalism that will go with the existing patterns,” says Domino’s Visuals Director Meghan McNeer. Or, if you’re looking to explore a colored check print to really create a statement, she suggests going for an unusual accent like a bright blue wall clock.
