Meet Marta Spendowska, Minted +domino’s Featured Monthly Artist!

Since Marta Spendowska’s arrival in the US in 2005, the Polish-born artist and illustrator has been taking the art world by storm. As the creative force behind VERYMARTA, Spendowska’s work seamlessly translates from fine arts to commercial arts with a unique depiction of color, rhythm, and pattern. With a background in Graphic Communications and a Master’s Degree in Marketing and Journalism, Spendowska’s compositions often feature visual representations and odes to Poland. Here, she touches on her inspirations and the one thing she loves most about being an artist.

WHERE DO YOU FEEL MOST INSPIRED? I feel most inspired in my studio, right after my first cup of coffee or after a yoga session.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? I tend to alternate between a minimal space with pops of color and a boho chic scheme with bold textures.

WHAT MAKES A HOME BEAUTIFUL? An open space filled with good memories and light. A light-filled space is key, mixed in with wooden details, steel accents, and hints of pink.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST? Every day is full of possibilities. I love that it’s not a routine-based career, per se. The habits and style might drive the work but the nature of the act of painting is so ethereal. I could not imagine doing anything else.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION? I’m very attached to items with meaning or sentimental value; old pens, notebooks, or jewelry belonging to a relative. My most cherished item is an amber piece I received from my mother, which belonged to my grandmother, as well as a few wooden crosses from my father, which belonged to his mother.

ON WHAT ITEMS DO YOU SCRIMP? Hotels! I love to be comfortable but it doesn’t matter where I sleep when I’m on the road.

ON WHAT ITEMS DO YOU SPLURGE? Art supplies, candles, shoes, and leather jackets!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION? Poland. I visit once a year for six to seven weeks to spend my time in my old hometown, Jawor and the Bałtyk Sea.
