Tennis star Maria Sharapova has some regrets. Design regrets, that is. “When I was younger, I preferred colors that popped,” she says. “I enjoyed a lot of pink in my life.” But now that she’s older and wiser, she’s learned to invest in neutral basics, like sofas and coffee tables, that will never go out of style. These days she tells a room’s story through texture instead of a Crayola box’s worth of shades.

That knowledge all comes through in her first-ever collection with Rove Concepts, a tight edit of earth-toned furniture in which she prioritized longevity over trendy hues. “From the very first day that we had design conversations, I said, ‘I want people to love these pieces in 10 years,’” says Sharapova. “I want them to be timeless.”

Her travels to Japan inspired the simple, streamlined collection, which includes an ultra-deep couch, a bench, a lamp, a side table, a coffee table, and jute rugs. The silhouettes are sculptural without being complicated, and it all blends seamlessly. For example, the velvet sofa and bench come in two shades (soft beige and olive green) that complement the white concrete pedestals, another natural texture.

The other benefit to sticking to classics and neutrals? They’ll go with the furniture you already have, she says, and many of the items in her line are multipurpose. “I thought of my friends coming over and putting their feet up on the couch, and then being able to use it as a bed,” she says. Similarly the bench can go in an entryway or be an extension of the sofa. A flexible collection in goes-with-anything colors? She has no regrets about that.
