Checkered floors are this decade’s comeback kid, and whether you’re sticking with your linoleum or upgrading to tiles, there are tons of ways to make this retro style feel fresh. Mandy Moore’s take is even more affordable (not to mention renter friendly): In a recent Instagram Story, the actor shared a peek at her home’s front room. Gleaming coffee tables and cobalt armchair aside, our eye immediately went to the brown-and-white rug covering what looks like her entire flooring.

This isn’t the first time Moore has gone bold with large-scale carpeting. In her office, she covered dated wall-to-wall padding with an earthy striped ochre number, designed by Sarah Sherman Samuel. Even the original version of this room came with a monochrome Momeni rug. Her new addition packs a graphic punch.

To bring it home, go with a classic black-and-white or camel grid to elevate a neutral space—even a simple white sofa and wood coffee table would look so much cooler next to this geometric design. Or play with color-blocking. Yves Klein Blue and sage green set the scene for a pastel palette: Pair your new textile with lemon yellows and lilacs for a saturated space that’s SAD-proof, guaranteed.
