I like to create a fully fleshed-out design plan before purchasing a single thing for a space.

I started by having the walls inside painted a soft ivory (Benjamin Moore’s ‘Seashell’) so that the view could take center stage, and had the newer vinyl doors painted a warm black to accentuate the view of the tree even more. Painting the vinyl doors black also made them feel more architecturally interesting and less like vinyl.

My clients entertain frequently and so their house needed to work for their small family of three as well as for large cocktail party crowds and intimate dinner parties.

Fabrics played a big part in the change in mood of the row house. I wanted the fabrics to work with the exposed brick wall in the living room and with what was going on outside, so I came up with a palette of orange, olive, naturals, blacks and browns. We added a mix of textured, patterned and hand block-printed fabrics for a little energy and interest.

A big emphasis was placed on bringing in meaningful things that my clients loved, like the metal floor lamp, which is a custom creation by my friend, lighting designer, Rick Singleton.
