Take the narrow, winding staircase that leads up to the fifth floor. Its walls are covered in a graphic blue paper that, while beautiful, emphasizes its limited square footage; in fact, the space is so tiny that you fully expect to be let out into an attic. Instead, the exit takes its form as a light-filled, vibrant aerie with 17.5-foot-tall ceilings. This is the brainchild of Young Huh and the designer’s contribution to the 47th-annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York. And, if editors’ reactions are any indication, you’re about to see this space everywhere.

The Kips Bay Show House, equal parts philanthropic endeavor and veritable design mecca, draws hoards of decor enthusiasts yearly. This year, the most talked-about space is sure to be Huh’s “attic,” which she has named “Young at Art.” Modeled after an artist’s loft, it’s full of colorful moments and thoughtful details: A stack of dragonfly-emblazoned La DoubleJ dishes in the bubblegum pink “coffee closet,” for example, or a series of hand-painted illustrations suspended by magnets near the bathroom to lend an air of personalization. When you’re dealing with a space so large in scale, it’s these small touches that really make it pop.

Huh was cognizant of the size of the loft from the very beginning. “The challenge was finding something that could fit the space,” she told us this morning when we previewed the Kips Bay house. Luckily, she found something that could complement the tall ceilings: Fromental’s Braque wallpaper, which sees colorful abstract shapes married with a botanical print. It’s the perfect backdrop to a stunning space.

A Maximalist-Friendly Vignette

Between the bold wallpaper, the 18th-century Gustavian banquette upholstered in a Colefax & Fowler red-striped linen fabric, and the scattering of throw pillows (each covered in a different print), this is the eclectic corner of our dreams. Take a page from this pattern play and bring the vibrant style to your own living room.

A Flower-Filled Farmhouse Sink

This window-lit area is sure to be the most-Instagrammed part of the whole room. With a rustic Kohler farmhouse sink set against eastern-inspired green tiles from Huh’s own collection, it’s already a melange of styles. Add a sinkful of beautifully arranged flowers courtesy of stylist Mieke ten Have and you have yourself quite the showstopping display.

A Monochrome Bathroom That Wows

Forget what you know about black and white. Huh’s luxe bathroom is anything but boring, and this is in large part due to the contrasting tilework that takes the shower space to the next level. The striped tiles make for an eye-catching moment, proving that sometimes, the simplest statements are the best.
