We spend a third of our lives asleep—that means our bedroom is the most lived-in space in our homes. It’s the room where we start and end our days, and that’s why the rituals that happen there are extra-important. In The Wind Down, we’ll be exploring the nighttime routines of people we admire and taking their advice to make the moments just before bed feel our best.

With her signature “so moisturized its quite literally glowing from within” skin, it’d be a fair assumption to guess that Katie Jane Hughes follows a laborious skincare routine, but the truth couldn’t be further from that. The celebrity makeup artist, who has grown a massive Instagram following (340,000 and counting) thanks to her daring, colorful looks, is all about ease.

Rightfully so, Hughes has a demanding schedule, making celebrities like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Ashley Graham red carpet–ready one day and perfecting that Glossier campaign you loved the next. Here, she spills how she gets her best sleep ever—and how she keeps her Insta-famous skin so hydrated.

Not so fast: I’m not one of those people who are in a rush to take their makeup off at the end of the day. It depends on if it’s heavy. I do take more time cleansing at night before I go to bed, but I really enjoy letting the natural oils develop on my skin.

Simple skincare: I cleanse with a balm—my absolute favorite is by Elemis. I love that it is such an aromatic experience, and I literally don’t have to try to get my makeup off—it just does it. Sometimes, I do a double cleanse with a gel from Fresh or Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser, but not always. Afterward, I let my skin air-dry a bit. Then, depending on how tight my skin feels, I choose what product to put on next. If my skin feels tighter than usual, I’ll whack on a big squeeze of Weleda’s Skin Food. It’s one of my favorite things to sleep in because it’s literally like a face mask. If I don’t feel that dry, I’ll use a serum from Fresh. This takes literally three minutes.

Lip service: My favorite trick that I do before I go to sleep is putting on Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask, but any lip balm works. Laneige’s is quite easy to manipulate. If I put that on and overshoot my lip line by a millimeter or two, I weirdly wake up without any of those tiny little fine lines around my lips.

Bathing beauty: I’m a night showerer. I really, really love the Body Hero range from Glossier. I take a bath maybe once a month, using Shiva Rose’s Milk Bath. It comes with a beautiful shell—it’s such a nice experience. Because I don’t take baths too often, I’m like, “Give me the Epsom salts; give me all the stuff.” I also like this body scrub that Elemis makes and I’ll use that twice a week. I only wash my hair once a week.

Pillow fight: I just started using Brooklinen’s silk pillowcases, which I’m obsessed with. My husband and I have three silk pillows and two regular pillows on our bed, plus a Martha Stewart comforter.

Tidy up: I hate going to bed with a messy house. It drives me nuts. I’ll do the dishes and get on top of that kind of stuff. Even if there are clothes on the floor in our closet when I go to bed, I wake up and I’m a mess.

Nightstand necessities: I have a mist from L’Occitane, which I sometimes spray on my pillows when I get a little stressed, and a Himalayan rock salt lamp. I find it super relaxing.

Stress relief: I like putting the Tata Harper Aromatic Bedtime Treatment on my pressure points.

Perfect PJs: I was gifted a pair of Sleeper pajamas and I also really, really, really, really love Lunya. It has the most gorgeous robe that literally looks like a gown you’d be able to go out in. It makes me feel like a diva in the best way.

Tech effect: I find replying to my DMs relaxing—when it’s good commentary, that is. Because I’m so responsive, I find it stressful if I let them build up. So I like to catch up on all of that and see what’s been going on throughout the day. I do always fall asleep and my phone ends up on my face—which is probably not the healthiest thing, but you know, whatever works.

Light’s out!
