A lifelong lover of textiles, history, and art, it was only a matter of time before Christene Barberich made her mark on interiors. Luckily, for all of us, that long-awaited day has finally arrived. The co-founder of Refinery29 and New York Times best-selling author recently teamed up with the fashion-forward home brand, The Inside, for an electric home decor collection that takes a heavy-handed approach to punchy prints and graphic colorways.

Gracing the surfaces of cushy poufs, a streamlined bed frame, a stand-alone screen, and everything in between, The Inside x Christene Barberich collection—which officially launched on October 18—features over a dozen color and pattern choices. Inspired by a handful of iconic designers (Anni Albers, Edith Heath, and Georgia O’Keefe are just a few iconic women artists and makers that fueled the global editor-in-chief’s vision for the collection), the pieces are as much of a reflection of voices past as they are of Barberich’s own fiercely unique and maximalist-approved design perspective.

“The quilted print was inspired by the improvised lines from the amazing quilt makers from Gee’s Bend, Alabama and I wanted the print to look like pieces of a deconstructed print before it came together,” Barberich tells Domino. “Their use of unexpected colors paired together was also something I was excited to explore, and especially love the contrast of the dark orange spice paired with wine offset with white in the print. I also wanted to channel inspirational places in the collection—the pinstripe was inspired by a recent trip to the big sky and other-worldly pink sands of the New Mexico desert. Corsica is the print where artisan meets abstract—it’s a whimsical design that beautifully balances the past and the present, soft and technical, masculine and feminine.”

Going beyond the bounds of furniture, the line also encompasses The Inside’s signature peel-and-stick wallpaper. Available in three equally pungent patterns from the collection, temporary wall coverings have never looked so chic.

For the low-committal type, peel-and-stick wallpaper has long been a source of refuge. Offering the flexibility to change the look and feel of a room with ease, temporary wallpaper is secret all design-savvy renters (and commitment-phobes) swear by. While we’ve seen a slew of brands release a number of inspired prints, Barberich’s graphic interpretations take a particularly stunning turn.

“I’m a huge fan of The Inside’s removable wallpaper—it’s such a fun way to update a space easily and affordably! I really believe design and creating a space should feel joyful and effortless, not some intimidating chore. The three prints we selected to carry into wallcoverings are some of my favorites and it was really interesting to play with scale on them. The print in Corsica, for instance, is scaled much smaller and more intricate in the wallcovering than in the upholstered pieces, which works really well for covering a full wall—or room,” shares Barberich.

From afar, the first pattern, Slate Poppy Corsica, appears to take the form of simple stripes. But, up close, the print reveals an intricate overlapping of delicate shapes. Up next, Marigold Stripe: A print that sounds as happy and, well, stripe-y as it sounds. Lucha, the most high-impact of the trio, takes a more saturated stance with its powerful primary hues and Victorian-inspired print.

“I love the Lucha—it was my way to incorporate an unexpected floral angle to the collection, one that had an unexpected “digital” treatment we used that gives the print this strange but wonderful X-ray-like quality to it,” adds Barberich. “I think the A G T Stripe is a great updated classic—and the colors are bold but easy to incorporate into several types of spaces and a range of color schemes.”

Whether used as a way to earmark a statement wall in the bedroom or to fill blank space in the laundry nook, each of the coverings require minimal prep and can be easily swapped out for something new when the time comes without leaving any damage.

In addition to the three peel-and-stick wall coverings, The Inside x Christene Barberich collection also includes three bed styles, two accent chairs, three ottoman styles, a square pouf, two different bench styles, and a throw pillow.

“Overall, I love how the whole collection came together cohesively and how so many of the patterns are able to mix together for an eclectic mix, especially that it feels very balanced between masculine and feminine. I have several of the prints on the pillows on my couch and am really excited about my new slipper chair in my living room too and love the combo of the marigold and light pink. I think the combination feels really current and I love how the classic lines pair with my vintage pieces at home, too,” says Barberich.

What’s more? All of the items are actually really affordable. Pillows start at $49, while the brand’s wallpaper comes in at $129 per roll. Larger pieces (like the chairs and folding screens) begin at $299. The upholstered bed frames range from $599-$799.
