No longer just a part of the grandma-chic trend, cane—the airy material that comes from rattan stalk—is here to stay. But you don’t have to splurge on a vintage Cesca chair to bring the look home. Your IKEA furniture will do just fine (that is if you’re up for a hack).

Since its launch in 2019, Fronteriors’s cane cabinet doors have been a best-seller. (The Dubai-based company specializes in making accessories—think: wood tops, brass handles, and linen-wrapped sides—for the Swedish retailer’s most popular storage units, including Besta, Pax, Billy, and Metod.) Why all the buzz around the breezy webbing? It offers a practical solution for hiding unsightly TV boxes and Wi-Fi routers without totally obstructing the signal or sound. The elevated detail also happens to be very easy to paint.

For the past year Fronteriors has offered customers the ability to buy cane doors in a natural tan finish, but last month the company switched things up and brought color into the picture. “We started out dreaming about painted black cane,” says cofounder Kathryn Hawkes. Now you can zhuzh up the raw material by customizing it with beige, gray, green, white, or black paint for the same price as its regular cane doors (around $160).

Norse Interiors, another company that will basically hack your IKEA furniture for you, is also getting in on the webbing movement: It now offers plain cane fronts, starting at $130, which you could easily make your own with a fresh coat. The best part? This trendy upgrade (really a hack on top of a hack) requires almost zero effort on your end.
