In a small living room, every inch of storage counts. That’s why floating credenzas are so brilliant: They offer a discreet spot to stow items (books, blankets, chargers, etc.) without taking up any precious floor space. But who said you have to use an ordinary unit to organize the room? Shay Mitchell’s interior designer, Chad Wood, turned an IKEA bathroom cupboard into a console.

“I get a lot of compliments on this,” Wood revealed during a video tour of his Los Angeles apartment for Mitchell’s YouTube channel. He then went on to explain to the actor that the streamlined units mounted to his living room wall are in fact intended to be used in a bathroom as medicine cabinets of sorts. All he did was flip the pieces on their sides and—voilà!—they look right at home. Plus now he has a bonus ledge to display small sculptures.

While Wood doesn’t mention the exact IKEA products he hacked, the Swedish brand’s Lillangen high cabinet ($130) looks super-similar and is almost 6 feet long, so you can cover a lot of wall space with it. If you’re looking for something a bit more compact, try the Eket unit ($80) with an open box, which will leave extra room for displaying art objects. Sometimes the best hacks just require turning your head and viewing things with a new perspective.
