Setting up your first home can be one of the most exciting parts of starting your new life. I love working with newlyweds as they combine their things to create a space to share together. These are a few of the most important things I’ve learned in helping set up a young couple’s nest.

one
Have a plan. I can’t tell you how many people tell me about the sofa they bought that was just a little too long. Before you invest in a piece (sofa, rug, bookcase) make sure you plan ahead and measure out the space. It may sound basic but this little move could save you a lot of trouble in the long run!

two
Invest in a few key pieces that will last. I’m not advising to only buy the best your money can afford – that’s no fun! Instead, invest in a few items and add to them with time. Expensive items such as sofas, beds, and lighting, are often the statement pieces, which get the most use and last the longest time. I suggest budgeting out of your project in such a way that allows you to buy one or two important investment pieces. You can continue to add to your decor in the coming years.

When choosing investment pieces think:
clean and simple lines
traditional shapes
classic fabrics
durable quality

three
You’re young so have a little fun. You want your home to make you smile and to reflect your energy. Collect things from your favorite stores, flea markets, and time spent abroad – these are the pieces that give your home the life and personality it deserves!
