When you pair an ultra-chic French editor and photographer with an equally cool and talented interior designer, great things are bound to happen. Such was the case when LA-based designer Sarah Sherman Samuel was tasked with renovating Garance Doré’s home.
Samuel’s distinct aesthetic was an undeniable influence, one that instantly complemented Doré’s own. Bridging the gap between her laidback California-cool style and Doré’s affinity for color and pattern, the result of the space was an artful balance of personality and texture.
“Garance herself was my inspiration for the space, my muse! Her personal style, her work, heritage, travels, and the way she wants to live her life are all considered in the space,” notes Samuel, adding that this contributed to the pair’s mutual goal of creating something one may not necessarily come across every day.
When it came to settling on a palette for the home’s redesign, the pair was keen on introducing hues that evoked a slew of earthy neutrals. That’s where the HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams “Everyday Balance” Color Collection came in. The designer-curated palette, comprised of colors that work together in any combination, includes warm neutrals and even a delicate blue-gray.
A subtle contrast was implemented by using a large amount of color in one space, paired with smaller doses of tonal accents of a contrasting hue. Given the fact that the Color Collection is designed to take the guesswork out of coordinating paint colors, each of the colors in the palette matched well within the home. Such qualities earmark the Collection as one that yields designer-inspired results, even if you aren’t hiring an actual designer.
A thoughtful implementation of each hue lead to a finish that was cohesive and refined. “We personally did this by carefully selecting which colors touch or overlap with other colors, by balancing the contrasting colors throughout the space,” says Samuel, who opted to designate the colors they were most drawn to, to highlight the walls.
To balance off the neutral palette, Samuel established visual interest by layering in a diverse array of textures and by concentrating on interesting forms. The pair selected “Pure White” for main living area with the intention of capitalizing on the abundance of natural light. With its reflective finish, it imparted the space with a crisp finish that would allow the otherwise neutral to come across with a fresh detail. In a similar vein, “Quaint Peche”—a peach-toned pink—was earmarked for the studio, its subtle, feminine swath of color being Samuel’s prime reason for selecting it.
On the contrasting end of the spectrum, Samuel brought in the inky, midnight-blue “Dark Night” for the master bedroom—because Doré prefers for it to be as dark as possible when she sleeps—as a refreshing alternative to charcoal or black.
Together, the hues lend themselves to one another, delicately flowing from room to room. The colors working together encourage a sense of calm and balance, evoking the timelessness of Samuel’s style while imparting the home with a fresh and revitalized finish.
