With its stonewashed linen bedding and Shaker-style dinnerware, Hawkins New York essentially delivers a manual on how to live an idyllic, upscale-rustic life—ideally in a renovated cabin somewhere in upstate New York. If you think playful patterns don’t factor into that, think again. The brand’s first-ever wallpaper collection just launched, and it features six unique prints made for mixing and matching.
The line was designed in partnership with Austin-based artist Alyson Fox. “We wanted some patterns to feel very clean and minimal, and others to feel as if they were hand-painted,” says Fox. Everything was screen- and surface-printed to create a textured finish, resulting in slight differences between each roll. That, combined with a palette of subdued hues, makes the entire collection feel like something you’d stumble across in a tiny artisanal shop. Fortuitously, you can have it shipped to you no matter where in the country you live.
Go for the crosshatched Weaves if you’re not afraid of color and contrast, or the more abstract Almost Shapes for a minimal—but still impactful—graphic moment. Each motif was made to be dressed up or down; though if you’re feeling stuck on styling, allow Hawkins’s cofounder Paul Denoly to give you a jumping-off point:
“We always like the look of tonal, so we would suggest a paint color that coordinates with the wallpaper style you choose for your trim or walls,” he says. Let the undertones of your chosen paper dictate the hardware in the space; for example, the terracotta colorway of Weaves is smattered with gold flecks. “Brass details would work well,” suggests Denoly.
It all comes down to the vibe you want to create. Whether you’re using the collection to spice up a cramped entryway or bring a calming, earthy touch to your bedroom, you can’t go wrong.
