Getting involved in a home project from the ground up is always a welcome proposition for designers. Such was the case for Chango & Co., the Brooklyn-based design firm that helped create this beautiful beach house in Amagansett, a small hamlet in East Hampton.

“A locally based architect, Thomas Heine, had done schematic drawings for the home,” says creative director Susana Simonpietri of the six-bedroom, 6,000-square-foot cedar shingle house. “We were asked to develop its interior language—to finalize layout, select finishes and materials, work on custom cabinetry, and the bunk room, and so much more.”

The clients, a New York City couple with a young child, wanted an easy summer getaway from the rigors of city life, as well as a place to host their family and friends. Thanks in part to the fantastical custom bunk room—which has four bunks, each with its own lighting and nautical bedding—they have plenty of space for guests and their children.

Each bunk (there are four) has its sconce own lighting from Circa Lighting, and bedding from Pottery Barn is in layered blues with nautical-inspired stripes thanks to Filling Spaces Arrow Indigo Pillows and Chango & Co. throws. Crisp anchor-decals from Urbanwalls defines the bunk room niche with wicker ceiling-mounted swing chairs from Serena & Lilly.

With respect to the overall design, they were looking for the right balance between relaxing and casual, and calming resort-like luxury. This is perhaps best exemplified in the spa-like bathrooms, which are clad in white marble and wood paneling.

“Overall, the décor is cool and breezy with lots of fresh whites and modern lines. Our aim was to achieve tranquil spaces that still felt tailored and thought through,” says Simonpietri.

In the master bedroom, an upholstered headboard and bench from Chango & Co. add warmth via their natural oat color and coolness by virtue of their linen fabric. The round mirror from Chango & Co. opens up the space and is reminiscent of a porthole. A private deck is the perfect place to enjoy a morning coffee in peace and quiet.

The main floor is on an open plan with a combined kitchen, dining area, and family lounge, all spilling out into the landscaped backyard. Furnishings include white linen slip-covered sofas from Chango & Co, pillows from Chango & Co, and sisal rugs from Custom and Sacco Carpet.

Bleached wood shows up in the coffee table, also from Restoration Hardware, and wood sculptures in the family lounge. “I like to use bleached wood where I can,” adds Simonpietri of the furnishings and sculptures. “In my mind, it evokes the beach and ocean.”

The pendants, a play on buoys, are Shades of Light and the dining table and dining chairs are from Restoration Hardware.

Throughout, the flooring is wide plank white oak, and traditional elements, like paneling, wood beams, and coffered ceilings, are met with modern touches like black steel-framed doors.

The family spends a lot of time here now. The built-in bunk room and swimming pool are popular with kids (both their own child and visitors), while the rest of the house and gardens are serene spaces for the adults.

Dining al fresco is a great option at the beach. Wicker chairs and wood benches pull up to a farmhouse-style table laden with goodies. A covered patio serves as an outdoors living room for adults to chill out, while their kids play in the pool.
