Project by Brittni Mehlhoff of Paper and Stitch

Now that coat season is upon us, I figured it was a good a time as any to create a set of entryway wall hooks for coats, purses, scarves, the works. To make things a bit more fun, I used geometric blocks as the hooks, and it really helped bring extra personality to a common household item. Bonus—the finished wall hooks are unique enough to act as a minimal wall art installation when not in use, blending in with any decor scheme.

What You’ll Need:

  • double-ended screws
  • wood blocks in various sizes
  • 2 or 3 inch-diameter dowel rods
  • pliers
  • drill
  • clamp vise (optional)
  • acrylic paint and paint brush

How-to:

1. If using a large dowel rod for any wall hooks, start by placing the rod into the clamp vise and cutting 3-5 inch pieces of dowel rod with a saw or jigsaw. Then, sand the edges if needed.

2. Next, keeping the block in the clamp vise, drill a pilot hole in the center of each block (don’t go all the way through).

3. Insert one end of the double-ended screw into the hole and use a pair of pliers to screw in and secure. Stop at the halfway point.

4. If you want to keep the wood raw they’re ready to hang (screw into the wall), but if you want to add some color, you can paint them with acrylic paint.

I went with two-toned painted dowels, but when hanging everything, I decided I liked the raw wood blocks best. So, I mainly used the unpainted blocks in the entryway, in the end.
