Ariel is the voice behind PMQ for two, where she creates bright, bold, colourful and creative interiors that are renter friendly, with a touch of glam and retro. Her project gallery is bursting full of colorful projects ranging from small DIYs, to furniture makeovers and room design.

I love the look of bold ceramics for tabletop entertaining. They help set the scene, and bring such character to a tablescape. I love a bold stripe because it can balance any print, while black and white are classic and go with any color.

Because the really nice ones come with a hefty price tag, it’s great when you can find ways of creating them for a budget. These DIY dollar store ceramics are not only under $4 each, but you can paint them any which way you’d like, to suit your needs.

What you’ll need:

  • Bowls, cups, plates: pair them up in the sore to make sure you have a base and a top for each piece.
  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks
  • Zinsser Aerosol Primer (it sticks to glazed pieces)
  • Paint: I used Americana’s Outdoor Living collection because I know it works well with the primer, and it’s meant to withstand heavy use.

How to:

Step 1: Once your pieces are paired off into a top and bottom, using your hot glue gun, assemble them pieces.

Step 2: Next, prime them using the Zinsser primer. I recommend a well ventilated area and lots of dry time. Try to do this on a dry day, since it will speed up the process.

Step 3: Once all the pieces are dry, start painting. Depending on what you’re doing (a stripe vs. color blocking) you’ll need to do some taping. I recommend masking tape since it won’t pull up the primer below.

Step 4: Using a bristle brush, apply even coats and let dry thoroughly in between applications. This may take 2-3 coats depending on how much color you’re applying.

Step 5: Once everything is dry, slowly remove the tape, and you’re in business!

I’ve styled them with bright yellows and oranges for spring, but they’ll look just as good through the summer and fall as the colors change.

Don’t forget, you can experiment with proportion, sizing, and colors to create one-of-a-kind dishes for your next event.
