Storing beauty products doesn’t have to be stressful. Instead of throwing everything in a zippered bag or messy drawer, try hacking this

Target spice rack

so you can have all your favorite products neatly displayed on shelving. Check out these simple steps to turn that run-of-the-mill kitchen organizer into a much-needed custom beauty rack.

We used Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2X Spray Paint in Satin Blossom White, Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish Spray in Clear Satin, and custom vinyl lettering from DIY Lettering.

STEP 1: sand it down

Use a piece of sandpaper to remove the shiny coat on the spice rack. Prepare all the surfaces for paint, even the backside and bottom. Make sure to sand over the front of the shelves a few times so the vinyl lettering has an even surface to adhere to.

STEP 2: spray on two coats of paint

In a well ventilated area, or outside, evenly coat the entire rack in spray paint. Hold the spray can far enough away from the rack so the paint doesn’t drip, and use small even sprays in horizontal strokes until the entire rack is covered. Let the rack dry for at least 30 minutes, and then cover with a second coat.

STEP 3: spray on a sealant

After the paint has completely dried (we waited a couple days), go ahead and apply a clear protective finish. Just like with the spray paint, apply the finish in small even sprays in horizontal strokes. Let the finish dry for at least 30 minutes or until the rack is dry to the touch.

STEP 4: add vinyl lettering

If you want to create a sleek, professional look, go for custom vinyl lettering. We ordered our Premium 3M Cast Vinyl lettering in .5” in the font “Garamond.”

To apply the vinyl lettering, remove the protective backing, line up the vinyl so it’s straight and press down. Apply ample pressure to ensure the lettering successfully attached. If you don’t want to order custom vinyl lettering, you can find small letter stickers at the craft store in various fonts and colors.

STEP 5: add your hair, skin and makeup products

Finally, you’re done! Add your favorite beauty products and store the rack on a vanity or near your bathroom sink. Everything you need will be right at your fingertips for your morning and nighttime routines.
