From Eny Lee Parker’s new-and-improved Ooo floor lamp to Steven Bukowski’s Bubble side table, chubby silhouettes reigned supreme in almost every category this year. But it was the seating (recall Todd Merrill’s Sugar Bowl settee) that really made us want to get up and squeeze furniture—and as a new decade approaches, curvaceous couches are getting a mini makeover, courtesy of Kelly Wearstler

The design dynamo’s winter 2020 collection, which she referred to as an “exercise in the bold treatment of form,” plays up an unexpected shape: cylinders. Take the Ardent sofa, which features a tubular back and a waterfall cushion wrapped in a sleek stainless steel frame. (The piece instantly reminded us of Urban Outfitters’s millennial pink Ollie sofa, except this 2.0 version is much more adult friendly.) Wearstler took this simple geometric profile and applied it to ottomans, benches, and armchairs, too.

Usually when we think of bolsters, we picture fancy cushions that are good for pillow fights and not much else. Wearstler makes a case for bringing back the dated silhouette as part of the furniture itself; cylinders are the latest in chunky-cute.
