After leaving a career in marketing, Indian born Usha Bora looked to her roots to create lifestyle and interiors brand Jamini, which she launched in Paris in 2014. Jamini, which means purple in Hindi, is inspired by the colours of her birth-land, Assam, where these rich hues have a deep importance to the locals. There, in India’s easternmost frontier, Usha works alongside talented local craftspeople, who help her create a beautiful collection of block-printed textiles, woven bags and handmade paper stationery. In just two short years, Usha has launched two locations in Paris and is set to open a pop-up shop in New York next May.

She picked five of her favorite products, which each showcase the traditional techniques used to create her brand.

Notebooks

“The notebooks are a way to spread awareness against rhino and elephant poaching in Eastern India,” says Bora. “And this is very important to me and my family.”

Basket

“This basket is made by women weavers in Manipur, in Eastern India, and I love the chic and minimalist look that is so modern!”

Pillows

“I started Jamini with the primary intention of helping expert weavers sustain their craft, and this product is a perfect example of their fabulous work.”

Pouches

“These are my favorite pouches this season. I love the color scheme, the graphic motif, and the fact that I can use it for a casual chic evening or as a makeup case when I am traveling.”

Scarves

“These scarves are really unique as they are made from Eri silk—the only quality silk in the world that is made without killing the silkworm. The texture is heavenly and luxurious, and the silk used is 100-percent natural and eco-friendly.”
