We never thought there would come a day when we’d use Fashion Week and the Container Store in the same sentence, but here we are. Really, there Jenny Walton was, sitting front row at Copenhagen Fashion Week wearing a sheer Dries Van Noten top and sporty Cecilie Bahnsen shorts with the Container Store’s small natural seagrass basket at her side. The fashion illustrator and jewelry designer got the woven catchall at the outlet on Manhattan’s Sixth Avenue a few years back, she told us, and not to organize kitchen goods. Yes, she uses it as a bag.
Even better than its double-duty function? Walton’s tote costs $10. It’s “one of the most practical shapes for all-purpose clutter control” the company suggests in the product description—apparently that can span from rolled-up guest towels to your phone and wallet. The piece folds down easily, making it possible to squeeze it into a carry-on suitcase. It’s also got handles (key to its ability to play the role of accessory).
It’s decided: The Container Store isn’t just for organizing musts anymore. But the more important lesson is you don’t always have to use home bins and baskets as advertised. A vessel is a vessel—some more runway ready than others.
