Busy Philipps has amassed quite the vase collection. “I love fresh flowers—roses, marigolds, ranunculus,” she tells us. When the actress picks up a bunch at the farmers’ market or Trader Joe’s (she’s no flower snob!), she doesn’t just plop them in a vessel with water and call it a day. The self-professed crafter is constantly looking for an excuse to experiment with blooms.

“I’m very into young florists right now who are spray-painting dried petals, accessorizing with jewels, and even incorporating cellophane,” says Philipps. “It’s a different way to think about flowers.” Her primary source for inspiration: Instagram. We recently sat down with the former Freaks and Geeks star to talk about her ongoing collaboration with Michaels, her three favorite florists to follow, and the DIY arrangement ideas she’s loving.

Botanical artist Kristen Alpaugh (also called @flwrpstl) tricks out her greenery with precious-looking jewels (she once glued pearl beads to orchids) as well as paint. This tropical monstera leaf with zebra stripes gives us all the jungle vibes.

This is called “happy hotdog day” ✨

At @flowerwitch, Kate Hinish’s blooms are as creative as the names she gives them (this one, which she posted on the Fourth of July, is called Happy Hotdog Day.) Desert greens, such as preserved sun palms, hold spray paint well and can add structure and height to a bouquet.

Bedazzle Them

Philipps’s go-to Los Angeles florist, @undernewmgmt, does a ton of work with baby’s breath, but it also has a soft spot for anthurium, often decorating the petals with rainbow-colored rhinestones. “I love sending these arrangements, because I think they’re so unique, but I’m also going to try my own attempt at doing some of these things,” says the actress.
