“Paradise. This. Way.”
hints at what’s to come, before you turn down an alleyway-slash-tropical oasis of plastic flamingos, striped beach umbrellas, and kitschy lawn chairs in Brooklyn’s industrial haven, Bushwick.
Inside the nail salon, the Betty-Draper-on-acid vibe continues: “Keep On Keepin’ On” beams from the back wall in fuchsia script above a row of vintage living room chairs repurposed into pedi stations with copper soaking tubs.
Original 1960s floral wallpaper in rich marigold, sunny yellow, and Barbie pink sets the palette throughout the space. In one corner, racks of vintage jean shorts, flowy print-tastic dresses, and Hawaiian shirts are for sale alongside a box of vinyl records and shelves stocked with Playboy issues from the era.
Owner Sandra Hatton (who grew up in Hawaii surrounded by the salon’s namesake fragrant yet deadly flower) decorated the space with a set designer’s eye for detail and a talent for DIY—like the far-out cement floor epoxied in metallic swirls.
Even the cement columns are covered in paneled wood straight out of the Brady family’s rec room, while the bathroom includes a groovy lava lamp.
But, oh! You’re here for a manicure. Taking a cue from Sandy’s gold glitter talons (topped with a flamingo, naturally), we suggest getting creative. These ladies are true artists with their Japanese toxin-free gel polishes.
Hatton also makes her own body scrubs and creams in tiki cocktail-esque scents like Pina Colada and Margarita. By the time you head outside post-treatment, you’ll think it was all a dream…
